Highlighting

Select text on a web page, then choose a color. Et al. has four colors: yellow, green, blue, and pink. You can rename the colors in the app settings if you use them for your own system, like “Important” or “Question.”

Highlights are saved so they can show up again when you return to the page. The web changes a lot, so Et al. tries to avoid showing a highlight in the wrong place. If a page changes too much, your saved highlight still stays in the Library.

Notes

Add a note to any highlight. Use it for a reminder, a question, or a quick thought. Notes stay with their highlights and can be searched in the Library.

The Library

The Library is where your saved highlights live. Open it from the toolbar popup for a quick look, or open it in a full tab when you want more space. From there, you can:

  • Search highlight text, notes, tags, and page titles.
  • View highlights by page or folder.
  • Filter by color.
  • Create folders and tags, then apply them by menu, drag, or bulk actions.
  • Take your highlights with you as a Markdown file or a CSV.
  • Export academic citations in APA, MLA, BibTeX, RIS, or CSL-JSON.

AI on supported Macs

On supported Macs, Et al. can use optional AI features that run on your Mac. They do not need an Et al. account. Your highlights stay on your Mac.

  • Quick summary. Choose highlights and get a short summary based on those highlights.
  • Ask a question. Ask about your saved highlights. Et al. answers from what you saved, not from the open web.
  • Related highlights. Et al. can help spot saved highlights that seem connected.
  • Search suggestions. When the search field is empty, Et al. can suggest searches based on your Library.
  • Name suggestions. When you create a folder or tag, Et al. can suggest names. It does not move highlights unless you choose to move them.
  • Citation details. When details are missing, Et al. can suggest things like title, author, and date. You can review and edit them before export.

On Macs that cannot run these AI features, Et al. skips them. Highlighting, notes, Library search, folders, tags, and exports still work.

Designed for Safari on Mac

Et al. was made for Safari on Mac from the start. It uses familiar Mac controls, supports light and dark mode, and keeps the extension simple while you read.

Keyboard shortcuts

You can set keyboard shortcuts in Safari Settings for the actions you use most.

Optional Highlight text
Optional Add a note
Optional Turn Et al. on or off

Open Safari Settings, go to Extensions, choose Et al., and pick the shortcuts you want.

Private by default

There is no Et al. account. I do not collect analytics or telemetry. Safari keeps your highlights, notes, folders, and tags on your Mac. On supported Macs, the optional AI features run there too.

When you want to take your highlights somewhere else, you can export them as Markdown, CSV, or citation files.

Ready to mark up the web?
