Take your highlights to Zotero.

RIS downloads can now carry your highlights and notes into Zotero, plus a few smaller improvements.

• RIS downloads for Zotero. Turn on Highlights and Notes on a source card, then download it as RIS. Each highlight, with its note, comes into Zotero as a child note under the reference. With Highlights and Notes off, RIS stays reference-only, the same as before, and BibTeX and CSL-JSON downloads always do. RIS downloads are part of et al. Pro, and now also carry the website title, so Zotero fills in Website Title.
• A practice page at getetal.com/try lets you try a highlight, a note, and a citation on a page made for it. It opens from setup on Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
• et al. now asks for an App Store rating once, on a later launch, and you can rate it anytime from a new row in the app.
• Export bibliography now follows each source card's own Include choices, so the file matches the previews. The Include menu has an Apply to all sources row when you have two or more sources.
• Very long highlights in the Library now show six lines with a Show more link, and changing a highlight's color updates its chip at once without moving the list.
• The Library opens much faster when you have thousands of highlights. It no longer loads the smart search index it does not need to show your list.
• The backup reminder in the Library now appears at 20 highlights, or the first time you add a note, whichever comes first.
• The import message for .zip files no longer mentions .csv.

Bring your highlights with you.

Import your highlights from other apps, plus a handful of fixes.

• Import from other apps. In the Library, choose Import from other apps to bring in highlights from a CSV, Markdown, or supported JSON export. et al. shows a preview before adding anything, skips duplicates, and reads the file on your device.
• Imported items follow your iCloud Sync setting, like the rest of your Library.
• Large Libraries now show 50 highlights at a time, so paging and search stay responsive.
• Citations keep every source reachable in long bibliographies.
• Markdown exports keep multiline notes.
• CSV exports preserve dates and leading apostrophes.
• Undo stays available while you change views, and keyboard and VoiceOver focus no longer gets left behind open sheets.

et al. for Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

et al. is now available for Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

• The same Free tier and one et al. Pro purchase work on Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
• Highlighting, notes, and the full Library, adapted for touch.
• iCloud Sync (optional, off by default). Turn it on and your highlights, notes, folders, and tags sync across your devices through your iCloud account. Turn it off again at any time.
• Sync uses the Apple Account you already have. Apple stores the synced copy in iCloud, and et al Labs does not receive it.
• Optional smart features now run on supported iPhone and iPad too, still entirely on your device.
• Requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later.

The first beta.

Everything et al. does, in one release.

• Highlight selectable text on supported web pages. Four colors to pick from: yellow, green, blue, and pink. You can rename them.
• Add notes to your highlights.
• A full-page Library that searches across every highlight, note, tag, and page title.
• Folders and tags. Drag highlights into them, pick from a menu, or move a bunch at once.
• Show one color of highlight at a time when you want to.
• Save your highlights as a Markdown file or a CSV.
• Export academic citations in APA, MLA, BibTeX, RIS, or CSL-JSON. Edit any field before exporting.
• On Apple Silicon Macs, a set of optional smart features: ask your highlights a question, get a short summary, get suggested searches, get folder and tag name ideas, and have citation details filled in for you. All on your Mac.
• Keyboard shortcuts for highlight and note. You can change them in Safari’s settings.
• Light and dark mode.
• Everything stays on your Mac. This release had no sync.
• A Safari Web Extension for macOS 11.5 or later.
