What et al. can do.

Highlighting

Select text on a web page, then choose a color. Free includes yellow, green, blue, and pink. et al. Pro adds orange, teal, purple, and red. You can give any color a custom label for your own system, like “Important” or “Question.”

Highlights are saved so they can show up again when you return to the page. The web changes a lot, so et al. tries to avoid showing a highlight in the wrong place. If a page changes too much, your saved highlight still stays in the Library.

Notes

Add a note to any highlight. Use it for a reminder, a question, or a quick thought. Notes stay with their highlights and can be searched in the Library.

The Library

The Library is where your saved highlights live. Open it from the toolbar popup for a quick look, or open it in a full tab when you want more space. From there, you can:

• Search highlight text, notes, tags, and page titles.
• Browse a newest-first timeline or group highlights by page or folder.
• Filter by color.
• Create folders and tags, then apply them by menu, drag, or bulk actions.
• Export highlights and notes as Markdown, Obsidian, or CSV; print them; or create and restore a local backup.
• Create one-source APA and MLA citations for free, with optional highlights and notes. Chicago and IEEE citations, BibTeX, RIS, and CSL-JSON exports, and all multi-source bibliographies are included with et al. Pro.

RIS downloads can include your highlights and notes, so a reference manager like Zotero imports them as notes attached to the source. BibTeX and CSL-JSON downloads stay reference-only.

Import from other apps

Move your highlights from another app to et al. In the Library, open More (⋮) and choose Import from other apps… If your Library is empty, you’ll see the same option there. et al. reads supported CSV, Markdown, and JSON exports, and you can choose more than one file at a time.

Preview what et al. will add and what it will skip, with reasons for skipped highlights. It skips highlights you’ve already imported, so you won’t get duplicates if you choose the same file again. et al. reads and matches everything on your device.

Made for Safari on Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

et al. runs in Safari on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, with the same Free tier and et al. Pro access. Your Library stays on your device by default. Turn on iCloud Sync and Apple stores a copy in iCloud for syncing across your devices.

Sync is off until you turn it on, and you can turn it off again at any time. It uses the Apple Account you already have. You don’t need an et al. account, and I don’t receive anything you sync.

Smart features on supported devices

Suggested searches, folder and tag names, and citation details are free. Ask is part of et al. Pro. These optional features use Apple’s on-device models. You don’t need an et al. account, and processing happens on your device.

Ask requires Apple Intelligence on a supported iPhone, iPad, or Mac running iOS 26, iPadOS 26, or macOS 26 or later.

• Ask a question or get a summary with Pro. Ask about your saved highlights and notes and get a cited answer or a short summary based on your Library.
• Suggested searches. Start with a search suggested from your Library.
• Folder & tag name ideas. When you create a folder or tag, et al. can suggest a name. Nothing is moved or renamed unless you choose to.
• Citation details. When details for a source are missing, et al. can suggest the title, author, date, and other details from the saved page. Review before exporting.

Designed for Safari

et al. was made for Safari from the start. On Mac it uses familiar Mac controls; on iPhone and iPad the same Library adapts to touch. It supports light and dark mode everywhere, and keeps the extension simple while you read.

Keyboard shortcuts

On Mac, Safari can run keyboard shortcuts for the three main actions — highlight, add a note, and turn et al. on or off. Open Safari Settings, go to Extensions, click et al., and choose Shortcuts.

Private by default

There is no et al. account. I do not collect analytics or telemetry. Safari keeps your highlights, notes, folders, and tags on your device, and if you turn on iCloud Sync they travel between your devices through your iCloud account. When your device supports the optional smart features, those run on your device too.

When you want to take your highlights somewhere else, you can export them as Markdown, Obsidian, CSV, or citation files, print them, or keep a local backup.
